A lovely Flash point-and-click adventure from (fictitious) development company White Kiwi, this one will keep you busy for just a short while. It was created as a class project by a group of students.
Shift is a game with no tangible objective, and yet it is easy to get lost in its beautiful world and tranquilizing soundtrack by Boards of Canada. Simply click on the various objects within each scene to make things happen, and to solve the few puzzles it presents. Quite enjoyable, and very pretty. The world would be a better place with more games like this. Play Shift.

This game was off during a few days ago. Happy to see it's on line again.
When I played, a week ago, the game finished at the sedond screen, like if it was not finished yet. Is it finished now?
How do you get past the part with the little blue thing in the water, i cant figure out what to click or in what order...

I'm still stuck on the second screen. How do you get past the liitle blue man an the water. I keep clicking, andhe just goes up and down, and occasionally his eyes will light up.
There is a spot in the dark part of the window that you need to click to light up the scene for part 2.
Nice game, although it would of felt more complete with a third scene.
So... I must seem like a dunce for saying this, but im stuck on the first page... Ive lit all the flowers and made the lights make an arrow, but my guy doesnt move! what do i do ?=(?
If you click on the flower at the top right, you get a beam of "flower energy" (or something). You'll need to do something with that beam. (It's pretty easy to figure out once you get the beam.)

Look @ the picture. theres a rainbow in the top Right corner along with lights that look like an arrow...... Do u think it's the code? maybe the place to light up? can u lead the man in any way?
This game is really great. Shame it is so short! Do anyone know if there will be more levels?

Hey jay, um can you help me? i got every thing in screen 1 but when i click those flower petals my guy sneeses and drops. then the window shuts off automaticly. what the heck?
Dojo - when that happens, the 2nd screen loads. Once loaded, there is a spot near the center of the window that you must click to move the little guy over there and begin the next puzzle.
hey jay...I love your site. I especially enjoy all the room games and the puzzle like shift. Now I'm in the second stage and I'm stuck on the flower color pattern( like many)...Has the pattern anything to do with the color of the 6 ladybugs appearing in the little box before? Can anyone help? Ty

Ah! ah!...search and you shall find...but the problem wasn't me...but the full screen!!! Once I loaded the site through the url, everything became scrollable...and the color code was found in less than 3 sec. Should we tell people this simple things? Are they working on a third level, Jay?

Dalma - sorry you had a problem with the size of the window. I guess I will have to think of a better way to present larger game windows. Thanks for the feedback. =)

Klick on the big searose. You'll see in the center of the flower a colourcombination (top: green, yellow, pink, blue, yello going clockwise). Click on the petels of the flower on the left (colours change by clicking more than once).

what do you do on third sceen with small blue thing in water ?
Jay, could you please tell me how I get that litle man out of the water on level 2? I have tried to click around in the dark parts, but...
SPOILERS FOR THE COLORCODE ON LEVEL 2
first, click on the bigest lily, memorize all the colors and their places.it should look like this:
Green
Yellow yellow
Blue Pink
then you click on the bigest flower, the color of the petal should change.the petals shoud look like this:
petal
petal petal
petal petal
now just click on the petals till they have the same color on the same petal.
There will appear a...after.
This, so far, is my favorite game on this site. Unfortunately, it's so short. I hope they make another one and have it a bit longer.
I LOVED this game. It's so calming and peaceful. I love the way your cursor floats if you bring it close to that huge yellow flower. I could get lost in this game...Thanks for another great game!

how in the world do the petals change colours in the 2nd level?? .. someone mentioned a lily.. but .. i don't see any.. the top left corner is lit..but everything else is black...is that normal?
That one is lovely! And I did it with no hints at all! It is much more peacefull that the panic rooms! i wish I could do stuff like that!

The link works fine. I believe it's something on your end if you're not able to play. Do you have the latest Flash Player installed? What happens exactly when you click one of the links?
What are the songs used in the game and who does them? I read on MetaFilter it was "Boards of Canada" but they didn't mention track names.
That was such a delightful game. Just wish it was longer. Are you making more ?

SO easy!! I didn't even have to use hints. Almost too easy. But, it was fun. But why end it after the second lvl? makes no sense.

This kind of games are so much more revording then wargames I think. (My boyfriend loves wargames) I like games that are about puzzels. And this calming music and beautifull sceenary just made it so pleasent! Spread the love people!

I'm totally stumped on the second screen. I can drag the petals around, but can't see anyway to make them change colors. Clicking on the ladybugs doesn't seem to do anything.
The music on the first screen is from "Boards of Canada", it's the 13th title of "Music has the right to children", and it's called "Olson"...
It's one of my favourite bands ever, you should definitely listen to this album, and the next one called Geogaddi... They're marvels...
About the game, it's nice but easy, and it's short, but still worth playing in my view.

I'm confused, I'm in part two. There's two purple ladybugs, two yellow, and two green, and I can't do anything.
Nice find! It was a bit short for my taste but the graphics and music totally made up for that.

Hi, precious Jay! I too, love this beautiful game and I thank you for it (I think I do, lol). I'm also stuck on the 2nd screen. I cannot for the life of me figure out what to do. The beam is shooting out but the little guy just doesn't budge. I keep clicking on the only 3 pink flowers it allows me to. I see the arrow, etc., but....sigh. Do I just need to keep clicking until I've done so the correct number of times? Also, I've had NO problems loading any games you've posted...ever, even those that so many others have experienced due to different browsers, etc. But, in this one, my mouse seems to be lagging terribly, almost in a delayed reaction kind of issue. I'm wondering if that's why I'm unable to progress. Thanks for any help from anyone. This is just gorgeous. God bless! jude

The "beam" you say? Isn't that one on the first screen? If so, try clicking the center flower and see what that does to the beam.
As for the lag, that is a common performance issue experienced when a Flash game displays a custom cursor as this one does. Unfortunately there's no way around it as of yet that I am aware of, other than, of course, avoiding a custom cursor altogether.
This game in particular is a resource hog. Lots of event handlers and such that cause performance to decline significantly. Definitely a beautiful piece of work, but not the best technical implementation by far.

By the "beam", I meant the little "line" that shoots out from the upper right flower while the little guy is suspended in the rainbow. Sorry for not making myself clear. I think it's the 2nd screen, after one figures out the pattern of lighting up parts of the 'schroom initially. Duh, the screen to which I'm referring is the same one as above on this site. I bet I spent over an hour today just trying to get anything to happen, but I'm stuck there. I've noted that when I click on far right flower, the "line" shoots out to him, but one can't click on the flower to the left of him. I don't know if it is the problem with the mouse so that I'm unable to click where I'm supposed to fast enough or what. But, thank you so much for taking the time to help me; I'm glad to know the problem with the mouse isn't just me getting impatient...;-). You are so sweet. Your Mama and Daddy must be SO PROUD. Would you please tell them that a crazy lady from the US (southern, no less) thinks they did a wonderful job bringing up such a considerate, humorous, kind and brilliant son? I'd appreciate it and I thank you again for taking the time for me. p.s. At this point, would it be easier on you for me to get this "Typekey" thing? Just let me know and I'll do it. OK, I've clicked on the slightly glowing spot in the centre of the dark screen, and I've now got the top left part lit up with
my blue guy in the middle of the screen, four petals which can be moved about, and a couple of ladybugs which turn the cursor into a hand when you mouse over them, but clicking at this stage does nothing. Also, you can click at the blue guy's feet or on his body, but not both... and there appears to be some sort of cycle involved here.
If the music wasn't so soothing I'd have gone mad. Please, someone post a full walkthrough!
The music is by Boards of Canada. In screen one the song is called "Olson" and in screen two it is a song called "Rue the Whirl". Both songs are on the album "Music has a Right to Children."

The second stage music is not 'Rue the Whirl'. I'm actually trying to find out what it is, but so far, no luck.:(
I'll post again if I ever find out.
The second stage music is "Send and Receive" by Tycho and is on his CD Sunrise Projector. The original White Kiwi site listed the song title and a link to Tycho. Subsequently, I now own a copy. :)

Here's a little bit of trivia for you since the original White Kiwi site is gone. The little green guy is named Aeris and his mission is to save "The Planet." (Final Fantasy VII for anyone who doesn't get it.)
The original game was supposed to be several levels with the final 'boss' being a logger who is cutting down a tree that you must save. Since White Kiwi is gone, we may never see the rest of the game. It's really sad because the screenshots on the site for the rest of the game were fantastic.

HELP! even with the calming music I am going crazed. I am on the second screen all of the top right has been lit up by my mushroom powers but can't find a way to light the other half. There were also some pink petals, I have managed to stack them, now I can't unstack them. I can't click on the ladybugs and the blue imp is looking at me so forlorn. How can I help him?
here's a walkthrough
first page
first click on the mushroom, a small picture will come up and from there just randomly click the spots on the mushroom. when u click the rite one the spot will light up, keep doing this with the other spots. you will find that it becomes like a memory game. when the spots have been lit up, this sequence lights up half the screen. to light up the rest click on the mushroom in the left hand corner and repeat the sequence.
when the screen is lit up, u see a branch of pink flowers at the top, click the floer at the end of the branch, causing a catapiller to knock of some petals.
if you wiggle your cursor around the glowing dots next to the tree, the dots will rearrange themselves into an arrow. if you want to u can put your cursor inthe centre of the lily and watch it float around but i dont think it helps with the puzzle.
then click the second flower from the right on the same branch as before, keep clicking it until it faces upward slightly tilted to the left.then click on the pink flower (not the petals) below on the branch until it faces to the left. then click on the pink flower on the tree to the right, which releases a beam of light that is reflected by the two turnable flowers and hits the point on the tree indicated by the arrow. if the beam goes off course dont worry, the beam can be released many times so just monuver the two turnable flowers untill it hits the target.
then click on the petals on the branch, this will cause the lil guy to sneeze into the next level.
second page
in the middle of the page there is something glinting (if u cannot see it just wait - it glints quite slowly)click on it. it will come up with another mushroom sequence like on the previous page, light up the spots and it will light up half of the page.
to light the rest of the page, drag the scattered pink petals and join the to the small pink flower, it can sometimes be quite trivial because the petals ping back to there original place if you dont put them in their exact place. when the petals are joined the rest of the screen will light up.
click on one of the ladybirds on the tree (tricky but possible) another closeup will appear simply click on each of the six lady birds to make them change colour. there will be two purple, two green and two yellow. this really isnt relevent to the rest of the level but you cant go any furthur wihout doing it- and its pretty.
click on the centre of the large water lily in the right hand corner revealing a code, memorise it fast before it gets covered up, if you forget it u can just click the same spot again. the code will be a circle split into 5 coloured sections. this code has to be aplied to the green flower on the left. when you click each petal it changes colour. eg if the top centre section in the code is green the petal furthest away (slightly conceled by a purple bud) is kept green etc.
when this code is correctly aplied a rainbow will come out of the flower and thats the end.

hehe can't believe people still play this :) I was one of the members of white kiwi, it was a fake company set up as part of a university project and wasn't really meant to get as popular as it did! but i still make flash games so who knows maybe one day I'll get round to making a sequel, if anyones still interested of course, much love x

I remember playing this game years ago and it still holds a very close place in my heart. It is the game that got me hooked onto Tycho's music. I'm a bit upset that it's offline now.
