Block Kuzusi

Noahblockkuzusi.gifA stylish Flash Breakout clone from GameDesign of Japan, Block Kuzusi demonstrates a great deal of respect for its roots, while offering just enough originality to feel fresh.

Breakout's classic paddle has been replaced by a white sphere, controled with the mouse. Hit green blocks to increase your size, although if they contain a skull your sphere will shrink instead. Orange blocks slow down the speed of the ball, and orange skull blocks increase it. Note that breaking the colored blocks is not necessary to clear the level.

While I enjoyed the stripped-down power up system and tasteful, minimal graphics and sound, the levels (which loop at level 9) in Block Kuzusi leave much to be desired. Each features the same 12x3 grid of blocks with only the number and location of the green and orange blocks to differentiate them. Even the original Breakout had more variety than that! Still, Block Kuzusi is one of the better versions Breakout I've seen online, and well worth a look. Click.

Having the mouse cursor in the way sure is annoying. The circle is interesting as a paddle; it's much easier to knock the ball down when trying to make a save than previously. It's sweet as a simple Breakout clone, but as someone raised on Arkanoid (remember the special NES controller?), I miss all the cool powerups.

true the levels loop, but the number of skulls increases a lot... hehe i went from a giant sphere and slow ball to the opposite in one go when the ball got up behind the blocks and hit like 16 skulls... instant loss

I think that when you leave skulls on the field they stay there in the later levels(not sure though haven't left to many on the field) I liked the fact amount of control you get with the sphere though, you can actually see where the ball is going to end up because of the curve, though I think it would be better if we were able to move it vertically as well as horizontally so the bottom of the circle could come more into effect. Great game though Jay, keep up the good work! (by the way have you been really busy lately or have there been a lot less good games coming out recently?) Have a good one Jay!

Love the simplicity - I am a huge breakout fan.

i cant play it.. when i click, the window (or whatever) doesnt pop up

Fixed.

Cheers, HassleFree! I'm not sure where you are from, but it was a holiday here in the U.S. last week (Independence Day - July 4th) and therefore many people were on vacation, myself included, and there was very little going on.

Regular updates have resumed. =)

I thought this was fun. Sphere paddle was fun and added a different element to determining your angle... also means you can hit the ball downward. The speed increases were exciting. I didn't understand the four choices on the front page.

The four selections on the front page are not choices but rather directions in telling you which blocks do what. It might be hard to discern, but the orange blocks slow down the ball, the orange skull makes it faster. The green block makes your paddle bigger and the green skull block makes it smaller. If you can't see the color difference you might be a bit color blind like me. :P
