joyeOUKANobody knows how to make relaxing yet still brain-teasing mouse-based puzzle games like Yoshio Ishii of NekoGames, and his new game OUKA is no exception. Move your cursor to a symbol of a cherry blossom (the meaning of "ouka" in Japanese) and click on it. Sound easy? Well, the symbol doesn't always play by the rules, and it's your job to figure out what the catch is in each of sixteen levels. It's a more simple affair than even the original Hoshi Saga, but the soothing charcoal grey and delicate chimes make this more soothing than an evening of yozakura in Tokyo. And unlike cherry blossom viewing, you can play this game all year round.

Walkthrough for Ouka:
(Note: hints used are shown at the end. You can tweet your score, and if you like that sort of thing, then try not to use them)

Level 1

Move the mouse around. At a point between the two bars, around 1/3 from the top and 1/3 from the right, the flower goes under the mouser. CLICK!

Level 2

The flower disappears as you go closer. Just go to where the flower was and click around where it was. (top right)

Level 3

The flower moves like its on elastic. pull quickly away and it'll not follow properly. try moving the mouse so you flick it under the mouse.

Level 4

You have to click where the flower is going next. it goes in a circle clockwise, so you have to guesstimate where it is going to be next.

Level 5

Click and hold. then release over the flower

Level 6

click very quickly. as you click the speed of the flower drops. wait till it gets to 10-20 then its not too difficult to click :)

Level 7

The flower moves in a star. it wont move to the circle you hover over, so hover near two points, and wait for it to move over on, and click quick.

Level 8

imagine there's a shelf at the top of the screen. move the mouse to the left, and the flower will drop to the floor

Level 9

Click repeated and the flower will come to you.

Level 10

move VERY slowly. As in VERY slowly. VERY!

Level 11

Press and hold the mouse to "charge" the flower. let go to see the flower. and then click :)

Level 12

move the mouse towards the bottom right corner, around a 1/4 in and a 1/4 up from the bottom. clicking the hint will tell you how close the flower is, and you can see easier which way to move to get it under the mouse

Level 13

There's a shield to the right of your mouse. move it to the very bottom of the page, then right into the right bottom corner. Then move up and left until you click on the flower.

Level 14

Just wait. The flower will move closer.. Like a little butterfly. Or a bird. (come on, trying to make this walkthrough pretty like the game!)

Level 15

there are (in)visible boxes on the screen. move the mouse so the flower hits on of the boxes. It wont go through. Then you can move the mouse without the flower moving.

Level 16

You have to pull the flower down. Click and drag the screen down quickly. then just click. And you're done :)

Ouka Walkthrough

  1. Move the cursor around until it meets the symbol.

  2. Although the symbol disappears when you hover over it, it is still there, so just click.

  3. The symbol moves in the same direction as your cursor, so just pull your cursor back to make the symbol chase after you. Once you have it under your cursor, click.

  4. The symbol moves on click so go ahead to the next place it will move (around the circle) and click there.

  5. Click and hold while moving your cursor over to the symbol, then click on it.

  6. Click repeatedly. As you click, the symbol will move slower and slower. Once it slows down enough, move your cursor over it to click on it.

  7. The symbol traces a star shape. However if you keep your cursor on one of the points, the symbol won't go there. So hold the cursor just off the point, and wait for it to come, and then click on it.

  8. Move the cursor all the way to the left. The symbol will follow it and then fall, where you can click on it.

  9. Click repeatedly to bounce the symbol high enough to click on it.

  10. Move the cursor very slowly to the symbol or it will dart away.

  11. Click and hold. When you let go, the symbol will appear briefly (longer if you hold longer, and shorter if you hold shorter). Use this to find the symbol and click on it.

  12. The symbol will orbit your cursor, so move your cursor parallel to it to sort of "wind" the symbol closer and closer, to the point where you can click on it.

  13. Come at the symbol from the right (move the cursor off the game window if necessary).

  14. Leave the cursor still and wait for the symbol to come.

  15. There are two invisible boxes in the top left and bottom right corners. Pin the symbol against a box.

  16. Click and drag down repeatedly to get the symbol down and then click on it.

Actually, sakura is the term for cherry blossoms.

Reply

@Cyberjar88: Ouka (桜花) specifically means "cherry blossom", whereas sakura (桜) can mean either the blossom, or the tree (the character literally means "cherry").

Reply

Hm. the hint for lv6 doesn't seem to be quite enough for me. Anyone care to spell it out?

Reply

Cyberjar88,

Sakura is the more popular term for both the cherry tree or its blossoms, however ouka is also correct and just an alternate translation :)

@JohnQ

I believe the more you click, the more it slows down

Reply

For level 6:

Click rather fast in the middle of the screen, and you can watch the speed (when you've clicked the hint) start to decrease. You can click the flower by accident while it's moving around while you're doing, too, so you could end the level early!

Lovely. And frustrating. And charming. And based on a good idea. And annoying that you practially *have to* use the hint.
As you may guess, I'm split between rating it 5 or 2...

Hmm, sincerely thanks for the japanese translations, but everyone forgets to mention that game is SO PERFECT. Needed 5 hints, a little bit of patience is not always my thing. Nevertheless, these games make my day and the coming week.
Thanks Yoshio

Many of the levels can be solved with one simple technique:

Right Mouse click, it freezes the symbol in place, then click on it

Reply

Also, level 16 can be solved by:

The symbol goes off the top of the screen when the level starts, just exit the level, enter it again, and center your mouse near the top of the screen. Click on the symbol as it crosses over your pointer.

Reply

Boo! Username those are cheap cheats that completely circumvent the puzzle solving aspect of the game. I have an even easier cheat to complete the game:

Just click the Close Tab button to finish it in one click! =/

Reply

Jay, isn't that called quitting :)

Reply

Yes, it is. Same difference, IMO, as cheating in the way Username was proposing.

Reply

Anti-spoiler: Neither (a) Right-clicking and moving your pointer to the symbol, nor (b) moving your pointer out of the field of play and then back in, are the intended solution for ANY of the levels (even though they works for many).

Reply

I kind of wish the "Congratulations!" message didn't take so long. I know it's only a second or so, but it takes a while to load and all the time I'm clicking "exit" like a madwoman.

Reply

I agree with cendare, the flowery animation is kind of slow and annoying to sit through...

Reply

Okay... now we changed the subject from translations to various ways of cheating? Why doesn't anyone confirm my statement that this game is perfect for a monday or any day of the week? A little bit of waiting between the levels, despites my mentioned impatience, who cares?
Once again: really nice game!!

Reply

I agree, pat. :)

It's a great little puzzle game of discovery. It has a certain hoshi saga flair to it, but it's different enough to have a new name.

Reply

I'm not sure why Username's solution is any less legitimate than the "intended" one. Both involve a measure of the outside-the-box thinking that's the trademark of these sorts of games. Until I read these comments, I actually thought that method was the intended solution.
