The first line makes me think of light.
The last line makes me think the top of whatever it is is either on fire or red.

Help would be appreciated. :)

And Happy New Year, everyone. It's almost 10AM here in Melbourne, we enjoyed our celebrations, hope everyone around the rest of the world enjoys theirs.

I didn't like the answer to life and the universe riddle because it's not as much a riddle as a trivia question. You should be able to figure out all the answers with just the clues on the screen and a little common sense.

Reply
Hoopy Frood December 31, 2009 11:00 PM

I apologize if I seem contentious, but number ten refers to the answer to the great question of life, the universe, and everything, not the answer to life etc. The joke really falls flat without that. I mean, the whole point was that they knew the answer but still hadn't figured out what question they were answering. Aside from that, these puzzles are really phenomenal. Much thanks to those who contributed and the happy little gnomes at JIG who put it all together for us.

The answer to #5 should be two words, not three. The question page should display two blanks and accept the correct answer.

At the risk of double-posting, I would like to point out that as far as number 10 goes they did technically find out the question later on, but it was a little messed up. Straight from Wikipedia, in the second book when

Ford and Arthur manage to extract the final readout from Arthur's subconscious mind by pulling lettered tiles from a Scrabble set, it is "What do you get if you multiply six by nine?" Arthur then comments, "I've always said there was something fundamentally wrong with the universe."

It's pretty easy to derive the actual question from that.

Marked for spoilers as it is towards the end of the second book.

AH ninja-edit me please and take out the last sentence of the paragraph as I was apparently misinformed. My brain deceives even itself these days.

Lol whats with the alias,s (The Crushinator), (The Sphinx) ?!?

Who made up the alias names anyway?
Why was *I* stuck with the dorky one?? :P

The boy who lived? I like it. ;)

elemeno gets a second alias? Thats like a double secret agent. I'm jealous.

At least, I assume elemeno isn't his real name.

@anonime:

Ouch! You just gave up the answers, without a hint or anything! Not as much fun as the way ray9na did it. Most of us are here looking for help, not to have the whole thing given away.

I can't for the life of me figure out riddles 11 and 13. Are they actually hard or am I just not seeing the obvious?

[Edit as asked :) and for the question as it: Did you check out the spoilers with the walkthroughs and hint-walkthroughs? ~ Kayleigh ]

Very nice! You guys did great putting this together. I rarely play these because of the need of arcane knowledge, but this one was a perfect way to spend a few minutes with the community. And like someone else said above, the final bonus made me smile--so simple, but for some reason that word always makes me happy!

I would recommend, tho, that any walkthrough that is just answers be deleted. The hint throughs are great.

Bonus 8 made me giggle because of how cleverly it was made.

Reply

Excellent! Most of the riddles were easy enough to not force me to use the walkthrough, but just hard enough to not be boring. I had to use the walkthrough twice, though(once because I forgot that you could click, and again because I don't celebrate Christmas), but it was altogether a great few minutes of my day.

I love this game! It is really awesome! When I got to number 14, I was so happy, because I had sent that one in! But, as I looked at the author of that one, I got confused. It said someone else's name. But, I loved the puzzles. But it really lagged for me when the level starts. All in all, great game!

[Edit: As far as puzzle 14... elemeno sent in the puzzle before you did, and elemeno's version of the puzzle was better, so we picked that one over yours. Sorry. -Jay]

I've never heard of

3 degrees below 0

it's not a common expression and a bad puzzle, other than that good.

[Edit: It doesn't have to be a common expression if the solution can be deduced easily from the clue presented, as can be done with this one. -Jay]

What is

trial seperation

some of these terms I've never heard of so it makes it quite difficult.

i don't really think the Christmas puzzle was very fair, seeing as how some of your readers (including me) are of the jewish faith. it made me feel like is was being left out. in the future please try to pick things that are more religion neutral

Wait, there are clouds in riddle 9? Might have helped to not have WHITE CLOUDS on a WHITE BACKGROUND. Thanks guys.

[Edit: The clouds are actually light blue: https://jayisgames.com/images/jig-community-riddle-9.gif Maybe your monitor needs calibration? -Jay]

Have the emails to the winners already been sent out? I haven't received my email yet, and one of my riddles was chosen. Did you lose my email address? Should I send an email quoting what I said in my submission of my riddle, to both provide my email address and prove that I am who I say I am?

Can't wait to get my hands on that t-shirt. And maybe you could throw in a pony? No? Oh well, it was worth a shot. ;P

[Edit: No emails have been sent yet. Year-end is a very busy time here at JIG (our Best of 2009 feature is being compiled as I write this and I have my hands full at the moment. Thanks for being patient with me. :) -Jay]

As a non-native speaker (with extensive experience in the US), I must say the following had me stumped, as I never heard them:

on cloud nine

trial separation

all thumbs - I _had_ noticed those were all thumbs though

That said, I'm not christian, but had no problem getting the last one. Do other non-christian people really not know that word ? You don't have to celebrate it to be aware ?

Reply

those were very cool, but even though I figured out what Bonus 2 was about pretty fast, it was hard to come up with the answer. I think

MCDXLIV:1444

would have been just as valid as the official answer.

octochan:
Most of us here on the JIG team took issue with that puzzle as it was initially sent in, many of us deriving different answers to the puzzle. We therefore decided to rework it so that only 1 answer makes sense.

Your answer requires sorting the letters into their proper order based on the standard rules of Roman numerals. We felt that it was a bit obscure to require that, and we decided to rework the puzzle so that it was more straightforward with the word "sum" as the clue.

1444 doesn't work because you're not summing the letters, you're rearranging them into one Roman numeral.

"Sum things missing" doesn't suggest anything about rearranging. Furthermore, the Roman numeral for 1444 requires taking the difference of some of the letters, therefore it is not purely a summation.

Re #15:

3 degrees below zero is simply a specific temperature.

It's a very common riddle (as are several of the others).

Re Bonus #4:

A trial separation is a period during which a married couple tries living apart, prior to deciding whether or not to get divorced.

Gah! I can't stop checking my email for that pony!

On bonus 7: That is not a homonym, it is a homophone. True homonyms must also have the exact same spelling (in addition to pronunciation).

Example: fluke (fin of a whale) and fluke (stroke of luck)

True homonyms have unrelated origins.

Polysemes are homonyms which arise from the same origin.

Example: table (furniture) and table (of data)

Homophones have the same pronunciation with different meaning and spelling.

Examples: caret (jewelry) and carrot (vegetable)

Homographs have the same spelling with different meaning and pronunciation

Example: row (propel) and row (fight)

In the UK, a "pony" is slang for £25.
I'll settle for that :)
(especially if I get a pony per entry!)

LOVE THIS GAME! So clever, but simple. fun, but challenging.

Taylor B.: Oops. ^_^; my bad.

Still, it works, doesn't it?

These were great and I enjoyed doing them. Only #10 stumped me, but I was expecting a play of image and text like the others. Here's my quibble: #10 was a trivial pursuits sort question--quite unlike the others--and required having read a particular book, which, being of an earlier generation, I have not read.

OMG BEST GAME EVER!!! I love this kind of game

I've never heard the terms:

"All thumbs" or "Trial separation"

Are they fairly common phrases?

Reply

Dave: they are common American phrases, but from an older generation ;)

Unfortunately, for Bonus 7,

"loquacion" is not a homonym for anything. It is a made-up word created to complete the riddle. I give the creator an A for effort, but grammatically it is not correct as it is not a real word. One cannot simply misspell "refrijerater" and call it a homonym (or, more accurately a homophone) for refrigerator.

Wonderful game. I beat it with zero outside help.
