skywire2a.gifJohnBSkywire 2, the sequel to last year's Skywire, has just been released by Nitrome and it exceeds the original in many ways. Fight three bosses across 30 all-new levels and encounter over two dozen unique enemies. New track elements also make an appearance such as gaps, breakable track, and areas where your cable car goes under water. It's more of what made the original Skywire so great with minimal tinkering of the core gameplay elements.

Three passengers are on board a small chairlift running across a convoluted path in the sky. Using the [up] and [down] arrow keys, control forward and backwards momentum to avoid enemies and reach the goal in each stage. Every time you bump into a baddie, one of the passengers is thrown from the cart. Lose all three and it's game over!

The key to survival in Skywire 2 is patience. Most of your time will be spent nudging the car forward or backward, tapping the keys to keep yourself stationary while waiting for safe passage. Enemies spring up, fly in, leap, fall and attack in a variety of ways, so taking it slow and watching their behavior is crucial to your survival. Must. Resist. Urge. To. Speed!

Also new in this Skywire is a two player simultaneous mode! Grab a friend and cozy up to your keyboard to participate in split screen chairlift mayhem.

Analysis: Skywire 2 is identical to the first Skywire in a number of ways, but Nitrome added just enough new elements to make the game stand out. Fans of the original and new Skywire players alike will be drawn in by the simple gameplay and dollhouse-style visuals that pack every pixel with originality.

As with almost every Nitrome release, the artwork and music in Skywire 2 is simply fantastic. The game has some very imaginative enemy characters (gotta love that kangaroo), objects and backgrounds. Unfortunately the bizarre scenery doesn't make its way into the gameplay beyond the basic "wait, move, avoid, wait" mechanics. There's something to be said for the simplicity of it all, however.

More of what made the original so great, but with some extra oomph to keep it fresh!

What else is there to say but:

FINALLY!

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Well, now I know what the next few days will be spent doing. :-D

Sigh. Because I absolutely cannot recall my password recovery phrase for the death of me, I had to sign in to typekey instead. =(

Now, for Skywire... I had so much expectations for this! Watched the preview trailer and all, looked so fun. I was almost expecting a game like Sea Gull company, but it was slightly disappointing, because the controls aren't as easy as it seems. The only two keys in this game become a bane when all depends on skill and luck and timing, which is thoroughly frustrating, considering the gravitational forces acting on the cable car. The difficulty lies in the up down buttons, and gravity. Reflex action tells us up is upwards and not accelerate, thus the consequence of speeding right smack into an obstacle, for instance.

Waiting for enemies to slide past or do whatever they have to do also takes the excitement and anticipation of wanting to complete a level quickly. The only point that I'm glad about is the really short levels per turn. Any longer, an average user might tend to find smashing their keyboards to be a more entertaining past time.

just finished all 30 levels.

pro: new enemies and concepts (disappearing rails, jumps) without losing the original 'feel' of the game, underwater levels (with fantastic sound!), just the right difficulty level to keep on trying until you finish the game

con: why the same song as in the first game (only very few levels have a new theme)? sometimes it seems as if timing your move does not work and you have to rely on coincidence. and in one level (27?) there seems to be a mistake, an enemy that is impossible to pass without losing a life - though that might have been me not trying well enough, of course...

overall: very enjoyable game, and I am looking forward to skywire 3!

There is something about Nitrome that bugs me... I think it is the whole if you die once, you lose all the score up to that point. It kinda mutes your achievement up to that point, and continuing from that point onwards seems, well, pointless.

Still this game had me hanging on a wire for more... (owch)

Pretty boring game.

However, I love the graphics and the music of it, and all nitrome games.

The song of this particular game is very nice.

Reply

I love this game, almost what I expected, exept the annoying oxyegon in the ocean, Lol. I am stuck on Level 9 at the mo, but I hope to be on Level 10 soon (Humungous Turtle!)

Reply

I really like the look of some of Nitrome's games, but the gameplay just gets a little too repetitive sometimes. I think I got up to the mid-twenties in this one.

Reply

Stuck on level 13, I hate that elephant!

YAY! Finally! I've been playing it for all of 5 minutes now and I'm already hooked! Great game!

...My only complaint is that the loading times between levels are quite long, and I've had to refresh the page because one level refused to load up :(

But other than that, no complaints about the game so far!

I've finished all 30 levels too. Skywire 2 is a great game, although I hoped for a new soundtrack, too.

dr0n8o: I've sent a mail to Nitrome about the problem in level 27, as I encountered it too. Here's the answer:

Hi,

I just checked and I can get passed the whole level without loosing a hit……not sure why your having a problem.

Glad your enjoying it though.

It has bosses !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love bosses.

How would a boss work?

Reply

Like all Nitrome games, it looks great but the physics are terrible. For example: you can roll down a hill from a full stop, and wind up *higher* on the other side. How am I supposed to predict what's going to happen if it doesn't obey the 1st law of thermodynamics? (not kidding)

Reply
Groogokk June 5, 2008 3:42 PM

Like dr0n8o I thought this game had about the right difficulty level (as opposed to its predecessor). The levels are short enough so you can replay them a couple of times (if necessary) before they get too frustrating. And I believe that nitrome did an excellent job with the bosses! So overall, this is an enjoyable game (though not as enjoyable as the game I recommeded to JiG last night ;-P).

This is much better than the first Skywire, the bosses are awesome, and I love the new obstacles. :-D

Only problem is that you can "cheat" using the unstable tracks .

Reply

I too consider this game to be pretty boring. Seriously, I don't understand what all the fuss is about. The cute voices are ripped straight from the Lemmings, the whole gameplay boils down to waiting for the "obstacles" to clear, all the levels are more of the same... I just don't get it.

(takes a deep breath)

Did you notice the trolls from square meal?It has both the green and the blue ones as passengers.

They have all the enemies from the original except
the cameos. The new cameos are enemies from on the rails, pest control, and aquanaut.

The elephant, the ducky, and the evil dragon head seem like mini bosses. Also the cobras should appear on mre than one level. The last few levels have a lot of enemies that only appear on that level.

I'm on the final level.I wish you could actually hurt the bosses. They're basically big enemies that have a complicated attack pattern. The second one is fun.

I want someone one to list all enemies and divide them into sky wire 1 and 2.I also want a nitrome wiki.

(lets out breath)

While I usually prefer more complicated games, I like this one very much. I like the underwater and oxygen limit. I completed this game, and liked it better than the first one, which was fun too. I would totally like to see "Skywire 3: The Adventure" where there are intersections and you can choose from multiple different rails to go through and pick up keys and have to go back and stuff. =)

The final boss reminded me of that enemy from hot air with the chomping teeth.

Kurious is right about the the fact that nitrome should make a less linear (pun intended) sky wire.It should also have new ways to score points ( such as killing enemies and picking up stars) and harm able bosses.

there is a hopping squid on level 6 (cobra level).I'm unsure if it is on any other level. If you want to see it stay still at the bottom.

Love it.
I think there should be an enemy which, when hit at high speed, explodes and gives you an extra 50 points or so (perhaps one of the ducks, which explode and send feathers cascading into the water?)

Glitch:

When the next level is loading, right click on the screen and press 'Play'- you play the level you just finished, and you get the points from it as well!

Nitrome pays attention to the details, but they fail to grasp the bigger picture sometimes. The graphics in this game are incredible. The music is perfect. The mechanics of the game work smoothly. But when you add all that up, the gameplay just isn't any fun.

I spent about 10 minutes playing this game before I got bored. Yet I can play Cat on a Dolphin (https://jayisgames.com/archives/2007/12/cat_on_a_dolphin.php) for up to an hour!

I just beat it 100%. Still, I have to question the sanity of those little guys. I mean, how anxious would YOU be to buy tickets for a cable car ride that's like a dangerous obstacle-filled roller coaster, that goes underwater without appropriate water protection requiring its passengers to hold their breaths, and you have a 50% chance of getting tossed from the car straight into the ocean because the car collided with something? I think I'd think twice.

Comments on the game; hints for level 17 and 21; issue on 27

You can cheat on 17 and 21, you can fall and land on a wire that is farther down the line without having to go through the bad guys.
I have the same problem on 27. I played it twice and still died there. The gopher was clearly not up and had not come up til after I had passed him and was waiting for the snakes to move. It happens near the end before the last two gophers, right before the circle of snakes; it seem that no matter what the gopher on that corner gets you.
I found it hard to get past the giant sea turtle on 10 without getting hit.
I liked the addition of the breaking rails and the under water areas.
I like the addition of the flies.
The monkeys were dificult until you get the hang of them.
I found the peacocks unpredictable.
I didn't like the ones that shot spikes from the previous one, I am glad they did not bring those back.
It seems like there are a lot more different people this time. The characters are cuter, how they are all dressed up.

The enemy shouldn't be a bird because there is already a lot of different types of birds.

birds on signs ,ostriches ,chickens, parrots, peacocks, mama vulture, vulture egg, hatching vulture, flying vulture, eggshell vulture, ducky.Did I miss any?

ALL nitrome games should have a editor, though I'm not sure how a nanobot editor would work. One reason I want a list of all enemies is for a editor that is never going to get made by anybody.Another reason I want the list is so I can keep track of all the enemies.

Reply

Has anyone noticed that:

The original Skywire levels (which you unlock after you finish all 30 levels) have been tweaked a bit?
For example, half the enemies have been sped up, so it is harder difficulty. However, where there were four goats before, there would be only two popping out.

Anyone else notice this?

do you begin with the rainbow car design, get from beating the final boss, or get it with the flashing car?

Those are tricky. The way you get past them is to edge up to them until they fly up. Then you can pass under safely.

So I just played through it a second time. I gotta say, this game is great. One of the best things Nitrome has done. Definitely better than the first, on many levels. I love the bosses too. Except the final one. He's more tedious than difficult (but also difficult), and I almost gave up the first time, when he killed me moments before getting to the finish.

I am SO glad they didn't bring back the damn single spinning snake. Or the little hoppy birds. Those obstacles were stupid hard.

So overall, I highly approve.

Okay, both Skywire 1 and Skywire 2 are great games, and I voted for there to be a Skywire 2, but now I doubt my vote.

The thing about Hot Air 2 is that there was much more room for improvement and many more things they could add without changing the basic experience. Skywire was just about perfect the first time, so there wasn't much more they could do. Don't get me wrong, underwater and two player are both great things, but Skywire's gameplay is, pardon the pun, purely linear. To make any drastic changes would be to change the gameplay completely.

A great game. Nitrome doesn't mess with a winning formula. Better than Skywire 1, however, next time I'll vote for a sequel that promises more change.

I am sorely disappointed and extremely frustrated. After countless repeated reloads and refreshes, all I am met with is a loader and intro that take forever and then a menu with no working buttons. All I see is an endless array of double question marks seemingly mocking me as I futilely click once, twice, three times, and more until I am in a high speed clicking frenzy that would rival the A button mashing of a Mario Party enthusiast. And yet I still wait here to play this deceitful sham of a flash game that sits on my screen like the world's most delicious cookie on a shelf too high for me to reach. I sit here cold, sad, angry, vengeful. Waiting for the day when I will finally be able to savor the evil, poisoned, lying fruit of deception that is Skywire 2.

likephilshead June 9, 2008 9:12 PM

OK, so basically Skywire 2 is just more levels of Skywire with some new enemies. That is something to cheer about. However, I want endless levels of Skywire! As I said before, the gameplay is pretty simple... so, is anyone else thinking what I'm thinking?

This game just screams LEVEL EDITOR! More so than many other of the Nitrome games, which also all scream level editor.

Oh, and Hot Air 2 came with a balloon designer. How come I can't design my own cute little riders? (I like the Abe Lincoln and the Martian especially)

Think the game is easy? Try this:

Do the last level (endboss) with two cablecars, controlling both of them at the same time. Can you finish it?
Ofcourse, you can practice the two-cablecars-thing at earlier levels ^-^

Reply
Lee Jardine June 12, 2008 12:46 PM

To get the alternate cable cars you have to go on to the "one or two player" selection and click the small arrows beside the cars. This will give you a selection of different colours plus your (*ahem ) ending bonus.

Hope that helped.

The youtube videos for the final boss are stupidly patient. You can go alot faster than they show you and be perfectly safe.e.g.After the second tooth rise you can easily go down a layer to the 3rd tooth and than go down another layer to the fourth tooth, but the youtube videos do it one tooth at a time...

Yes you can. I did it once before, but I think I died somewhere on the track. Don't get me wrong, it's useful, but when I tried it I lost one person, and I'm useless at Skywire 2, so you know what that means, don't you, Ganondorf?

When I first saw the trailer, I thought, "oh wow!". And straight after Knuckleheads was released, I started counting down to June 4th. Then, when it was released, I had a go at it, and got up to about Level 16. Of course I've finished it now. The last boss was hard. I think I kept trying for a week and a half before I finished it. But, ever since I have completed it, I've went into a spiralling depression.

Save me, Nitrome.

Look at Level 19. The first major obstacle is meant to be a 4-edged goat jack-in-the-box thing.
It is only a 2-edged obstacle in the redone version. It makes the level a that little bit easier.

Has anyone seen the new comic strips? I like the third one best. Off the Rails, Twang, Square Meal, and Cheese Dreams! My favourite games!

Hopefully this means another game is coming in a week! OK, probably not, but I can dream!

And the voting poll! I'm so exited for it! Straight after Hot Air 2 was released, the voting poll opened. So I bet that's what this year is going to be like! When it does open, if it's there, I'll vote for Off the Rails. If you want to see my opinions for it then you should look at my first post.

Level 30:
Get your moves right. Even though sometimes you don't know which tooth is going to rise, just try going through the rising teeth. Not my soloution, which is for people who have conkered Dental Practice (Level 30).

The new game is "Small Fry". Go play it!

PS: Sorry I HAD to do this. Should have waited for Jay to do it, but never mind.

There's another cameo I found!

The moles come from "off the rails", look for it on Nitrome because it hasn't been reviewed here.

Another cameo!

The puffer fish are found in Aquanaut.

Has anyone else beat level 20 of the Skywire 1 levels in Skywire 2? You get another cable car! And this time it's flashing!

Roadripper:
Yes, I like that car best, although I never use it.

And:
Where is Tabernacle Street anyway? London is a confusing place which I don't live near but want to know anyway.

Re: "if you die once, you lose all the score up to that point. It kinda mutes your achievement up to that point, and continuing from that point onwards seems, well, pointless."

- That is really annoying. I generally don't pay much attention to score in games like this, and when the wipe it out entirely every time you die, it makes the score even more meaningless... which, in this case, means it doesn't matter at all how many passengers survive. I really wish there was a better motivator for that... maybe unlocking a special ability if you complete a course with all three, or maybe giving the car extra speed that you lose each time you lose a passenger.

Idk if anyone notices but...

Some of the machines seem damadged and...
I ALWAYS get the feeling that another machine in skywire damadged them sp maybe that might be something to do with skywire 3

I love this game! So stuck on level 27. Does the croci have to follow the rail?

But this game is addictive! I love it.

Gosh, I LOVE this game. I'm totally addicted, too. It took me ages to get past level 28, the one with the bats. I'm still on level 30. I can do it up to the loop. Then I start dying. It seems like a lot of people here do the same. My sister's only ever gotten up to the nineteenth level. I don't understand why the 10, 20, and 30 levels have a skull instead of a number. How do you guys get the flashing car? I want it.

Level 30 is really hard! I was working on it for one year, believe it or not but the easy way to pass in which i was able to pass was to wait on the loopy thing and don't run fast or you will lose a life. Also, try to make sure the cable car is in the gap when the teeth rise up. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
